Risk Assessments
Legislation places a duty on employers to undertake a wide range of different risk assessments. These assessments are used to generate the "safe systems of work" that we all use to undertake our day to day tasks. In turn the various assessment also help to define the necessary information, instruction and training that should be provided to help keep people safe at work.
At the core is the general risk assessment which may, in turn, lead on to a range of other assessments depending on the situations or activities being considered.
The task of risk assessment involves looking at an activity or area in order to identify the hazards involved and the degree of risk arising from those foreseeable hazards. For each and every hazard the question to be asked is, ‘Is the level of risk, taking into account the existing control measures or precautions, acceptable?’
If the answer is No, then more controls will be required. If the answer is Yes, then those controls need to be implemented and monitored to ensure they remain in place and are working.
There are a large number of risk assessment types that may need to be considered and the following list will allow you access to more information on each kind. Each link will take you a page with more information on that subject.
