Driving at work

Driving at work

Twenty road deaths each week involve people who are at work. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations obligates employers to undertake risk assessments on all work activities. Driving a vehicle of any type whilst at work is considered a work activity and so the legal expectations placed upon the council is to risk assess driving at work, identify relevant controls to reduce risk and put in place relevant information, instruction and training. A range of resources exist to help managers and employees to manage the risks that are associated with driving whilst at work and this page will give you access to the main guidance document entitled “Driving at work”, but also:

Where employees drive a vehicle (council owned or privately owned) then that activity needs to be considered within an appropriate risk assessment and the findings shared with that employee. Often the above documents will offer the necessary information and instruction but in addition training opportunities can also available as necessary. All car, pool car and light van drivers must complete the online training course accessed via the Learn of Line portal and those that driving larger vehicles will undergo necessary assessment and training as required for the post they hold.

If you are looking for a completed risk assessment linked to the work that you do then visit our Resources page and follow the links to your own relevant Health and Safety Manual/Assessment.

Other driving related documents to include insurance procedures and claim forms can be obtained from the Risk and Insurance intranet page. There has also been a sigificant amendment to the Highway Code and this should be understood by all drivers, an indication of the changescan be found on the Highway Code changes page.
