Pensions
Why save for retirement?
We are living longer and healthier lives and can look forward to enjoying a longer, more active retirement than ever before.
This is good news of course but it does mean that we need to save while we are working so that we can enjoy life to the full when we retire.
You will be contractually enrolled into either the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) or the Scottish Teachers’ Pension Scheme when you start your employment with us. These schemes offer benefits based on your average earnings along with the opportunity to take a tax-free lump sum when you retire. It also offers the option to apply for benefits early if you are unable to work due to ill health. Benefits may also be payable to your dependants in the event of your death.
In line with the Age Equality Regulations 2011 the retirement age of 70 years has been removed, allowing you to choose the date at which you retire. However this change does not affect access to pension benefits, and if you are a scheme member, you can access your pension benefits without reduction from your state pension age.
To join Strathclyde Pension Fund you must complete the opt-in pension scheme form and send it to the pensions team either by post to; Floor 3, Council Offices, Almada Street, Hamilton, ML3 0AA or alternatively emailed to pensions@southlanarkshire.gov.uk.
If you wish to opt-out of the pension scheme you need to complete the relevant form on the Strathclyde Pension Fund website.
