Ill health
Sometimes an employee may develop a medical condition that prevents them from being able to perform some or all of the tasks of their post. In some cases an employee may need to stop working altogether as a result of ill health.
Before taking any further action, the employee should be referred for an occupational health assessment. Depending on the outcome of the assessment there are a number of potential outcomes:
Reasonable adjustments
Reasonable adjustments may be required to allow the employee to return to their substantive post. Refer to the Incapability Guidance for Managers and liaise with Personnel Services for further advice.
Redeployment
The employee may be assessed as being unfit for their substantive post, however they may be able to return to a different post in their resource or the Council. Managers should refer to the Incapability Guidance for Managers and liaise with Personnel Services for further advice.
Ill Health Retirement
The medical report may indicate that the employee is a potential candidate for Ill Health Retirement, and that a formal assessment for this will be arranged. Managers should refer to the Ill Health Retirement Guidance and liaise with Personnel Services for further advice.
Termination on the grounds of Incapability
The medical report may indicate that the employee remains unfit for work with no indication of a likely return date. Termination on the grounds of Incapability due to Ill Heath may apply. Managers should refer to the Incapability Guidance for Managers and liaise with Personnel Services for further advice.
