Password reset changes
Published Tuesday 07 July 2026
Microsoft is making changes to how users reset their passwords.
Instead of using contact information already listed in the system, everyone will need to register specific ways to verify their identity, specifically Multifactor Authentication (MFA). The aim is to make password resets more secure and trustworthy. There will be a campaign starting on Monday 6 July 2026 to prompt users to register their authentication methods, and from Monday 7 September 2026, only MFA registered methods will be accepted for password resets.
From Monday 6 July 2026 users who have not registered for MFA will be prompted to do so in order to facilitate the self-service password functionality.
From Monday 7 September 2026 users who have not registered for MFA will be unable to use the self-service password functionality.
Instructions on how to set up MFA can be found on Multi factor authentication - user guide.
