Naming conventions
Naming conventions
Naming conventions are simple rules which help you to create understandable, consistent and predictable names for electronic documents.
As we move towards introducing Objective, which is the new Electronic Document and Records Management System, across the council it is important that we use naming conventions.
How do they help me?
Naming records in a consistent and logical way makes it easier for you and your colleagues to find documents.
It helps:
- group your documents in a logical order
- reduce duplication, storage space
- reduce storage costs
- keep business records safer and secure
- improve compliance with external regulations
- provide a better work environment as less time and frustration is spent trying to find information
Who do they apply to?
These rules apply to everyone who creates electronic documents. While Objective is being introduced on a rolling programme across the council you should now use the naming conventions for any electronic document you create. For more information see Naming conventions guidance.
