Substance Misuse Service
Substance misuse teams are based in local offices. They provide services to people with problems with alcohol and/or drug misuse. Information and support can also be provided to families and carers of substance misusers.
Assisting people to change is the primary focus of the Substance Misuse Services. This is achieved by providing:
- full assessment
- targeted change programmes
- referral to other services
Targeted change programmes are based on the full assessment and include:
- harm reduction
- task identification and agreed action plan
- relapse prevention and management
- referral to other services
- joint working
Referral to other services can include:
- referral to GP or other health services
- employment and education services
- residential and community rehabilitation services
- family support services
- joint working
Accessing services
Services can be accessed by contacting the local social work office. The substance misuse team will arrange an appointment with the service user and undertake the full assessment.
Services offered are individual and person centred with the unique needs of the service user informing the action plan.

Drinkaware - An independent, UK-wide charity aiming to change the UK's drinking habits for the better
Scottish Drug Misuse Database Dashboard (ISD Scotland) - This electronic dashboard provides users with available information from the Scottish Drugs Misuse Database (SDMD) on individuals presenting for initial assessment (for a new drug treatment episode) at specialist drug treatment services.
Know the Score - information and advice on drugs for young people, parents and professionals
Lanarkshire Alcohol and Drug Partnership - multi-agency strategic planning group which co-ordinates actions around alcohol and drug-related problems in Lanarkshire
Liber8 - alcohol addiction counselling and street work with youths in Lanarkshire
Narcotics Anonymous - information if you think you have a drug problem, are a recovering addict or a professional working with adults
Scottish Families Affected by Drugs - supporting families across Scotland that are affected by drug misuse
