Psychological Services

The Psychological Service is a central service which is a statutory function of the authority's response to education and other relevant legislation.

The service is part of the Inclusion Service within Education Resources.

There are three Psychological Services centres across the authority in Hamilton, Lanark and East Kilbride. The service includes a team of clerical assistants who are based in the three centres, and a team of psychologists who provide a service delivery to specific learning communities, but who also work on a council-wide basis.

The Psychological Service aims to provide a quality client focused service to promote the best interests of children and young people. We offer a variety of interventions ranging from consultation and advice, assessment in collaboration with key adults, to working directly with the young person. We are committed to helping the Scottish Executive achieve its overall goals.

Within the context of the national priorities in education, the Psychological Service uses psychologists' knowledge and skills to:

  • help children and young people to achieve, develop fully and benefit from educational provision
  • help identify the additional support needs of children and young people
  • work in partnership with the key adults involved with children
  • raise awareness about the challenges children experience
  • work with others to bring about positive change
  • assist educational and other establishments to develop knowledge, skills and services appropriate to those in their care
  • carry out research to aid the planning and development of services for children and young people
