Retirement

At South Lanarkshire Council we do not have a set retirement age therefore you are free to choose a date when you want to retire.  You must inform your manager of your intention to retire in writing at least 4 months prior to your chosen date.  On receipt of your letter, your manager will inform Personnel Services who will write to you to confirm your decision.

To obtain an estimate of your pension figures you can use the benefits calculator which is available in the SPFOnline area on the Strathclyde Pension Fund Office website.  Details of how to do use the calculator can be found in Accessing Pension Figures Online.

To obtain an estimate of your pension figures if you are in the Teachers pension scheme you can use the benefits calculator which is available on the SPPA website.

Pension scheme members - Local Government Pension Scheme

The normal retirement age under the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is in line with your state pension age. If you choose to work on beyond this age you will continue to accrue pension benefits. However, benefits must be taken before age 75, or you will constitute an unauthorised payment and be subject to additional taxation. You do not need our consent for this type of retirement and you should follow the usual resignation process, giving your manager the required notice (minimum 4 months notice) in writing of your intended retirement date. You may obtain an estimate of your benefits from the Pension Fund to assist you in making your decision.

Employees may choose to retire aged 55-64, with immediate access to pension benefits, providing that you have at least two years total LGPS membership. Benefits will be reduced unless you are a protected member.

The Council offers employees, from age 60 the option of reducing your hours or grade while giving you the chance to receive all or part of your accrued pension benefits and continuing to work (see Flexible Retirement Policy for full details). This enables us to retain experience while allowing you to wind down in the prelude to retirement. You can elect to continue your superannuation contributions building up further benefits and may remain in the scheme until two days prior to your 75th birthday. Flexible retirement requests that result in a strain on the fund to the council will not be granted. Consideration will only be given to the cases where these costs have been incorporated into the actuarial reduction (on the basis that there will be no cost to us).

Re-employment after retirement

Your pension benefits may be subject to reduction or additional taxation if you return to employment with us, or any other employer that offers the same pension scheme, after having left on grounds of retirement. If you are considering such employment, you should contact the pension fund office and HM Revenue and Customs for advice.

If you do return to such employment, you must immediately notify the pensions office, even if you do not become an active member.
