Absence certification
Depending on the length of your absence you will be required to provide certification.
This can be done in two ways, click on the headings for more information:-
There is no longer a requirement for you to submit a "self cert" to cover you for absences of 7 days or less. This information will now be captured at the return to work discussion.
You must submit a Fit Note (previously called a sick note or medical certificate) if you are off sick for more than 7 days in a row. Your GP or hospital doctor will provide you with a Fit Note. Your doctor may provide you with a back-dated fit note which covers you from day one of your absence. The fit note will say that you are either not fit for work or may be fit for work.
If your GP states that you may be fit for work, you should discuss this with your line manager as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made for your return (for example, different working hours or tasks etc). You should complete the back of the fit note and send it to your line manager as soon as possible. You must ensure that you are covered for all of the days that you are absent.
Failure to submit a fit note for a particular period could result in an overpayment of salary.
