Grievance

We encourage open communication between employees and managers. If you have a problem at work, speak to your manager and try to resolve any difficulties. Often problems arise from simple misunderstandings. However, if this doesn't work, what can you do?

We have a formal grievance procedure which can be used by an individual or a group of employees.

How does it work?

The procedure allows you to raise a grievance with your line manager and entitles you to a reply within set timescales. A brief outline is given below.

There are some matters exluded from the Grievance Procedures such as discipline, pay frequency, sick pay, pension, national agreements, grading of posts.

There are also seperate procedures for Recruitment Complaints, Harrassment, Victimisation and Discrimination.

If you have a grievance or complaint, you should raise the matter with your manager, who will try and resolve the matter and in any case reply to you within 2 working days.

If you are still disatisfied and are a member of a trade union, you should contact your local representative (steward) who will assist you to complete your grievance in writing usine the standard form (PER/GP/1/15). The written grievance is sent to a senior officer who will, within 5 working days, arrange a meeting in an attempt to reach a settlement. At the meeting you will have the opportunity to put forward you case. Afterwards, you will be entitled to a written response from the Resource within 5 working days of the meeting.

If the grievance is still not resolved, and you still want to pursue the matter, your trade union representative will write to Personnel Services asking that the grievance be submitted to the Sub Committee for hearing.  Prior to this, Personnel Services will convene a meeting to try to reach a settlement. Following this, if there is still no agreement, you will be asked to prepare a paper for consideration by the Sub-Committee.
