Service reviews

There are four key components to any service review, these are:-

  • Compare process and performance of others across a range of relevant sectors.
  • Consult service users, partners and the wider business community, the voluntary sector, staff and trade unions, to find their views on current service provision, opoprtunities for improvement and setting new performance targets.
  • Challenge why, how and by whom a service is being provided - is the service needed, does it reflect corporate priorities, how much does it cost?
  • Competition - should we be providing the service, are we doing so in a well managed, cost effective and efficient way justified through fair and open competition or options appraisals?

In particular, the last section on competition applies to all reviews and should test existing service delivery based on a good understanding of other possible options.  These options may different in different circumstances but should involve and demonstrate a knowledge of the current market place (internal or external), in-house and partnership opportunties and possible service delivery structures.

If your service area is undergoing a review, advice and guidance is available from Personnel Services.
